Being that my instagram account is mostly about sustainable ethical fashion, I thought it important to touch upon what exactly that means. Sustainable fashion, for the most part, means clothing that is created with a goal to not deplete the environment of resources or harm it with chemicals. That is a very simple definition as there is so much more that is involved. Ethical fashion encompasses sustainable fashion with the addition of the company being sure that they do good by their workers by ensuring they pay living wages, provide safe working environments as well as being sure that they uphold high standards for sustainability.
For someone who is new to the idea of sustainable fashion, the best place to start is to shop your own closet. “But I have fast fashion in my closet” you say. Well, shopping your closet is the most basic and first way to lessen your impact on the environment through fashion. The clothes that you already own don’t have much further of an impact on the environment (besides washing) and due to that, wearing the clothes you own first and foremost lessens your impact drastically. Plus, shopping your closet (or your friends!) can be a fun way to reinvent pieces and styles using clothes you may not wear much anymore.
If you need new clothes, thrifting is the second best option. Buying from companies who sell used clothing drastically lessens your impact by taking clothes that would have ended up in a landfill and giving them a second life. There are amazing treasures in thrift stores if you just take the time to look. Most of my closet is now thrifted and it gives me the opportunity to purchase things I wouldn’t have otherwise worn, or pieces that would have been out of my price range.
Last up is shopping from ethical brands. How do you know what brands are ethical? Using the Good On You app or website is the best resource for this. This site has a searchable database where you can look for the brand you were debating a purchase from and read about the brand’s grade on their sustainability, ethics, and animal use. It basically is a guide to shopping that can be referred to over and over again. Lessening your impact on the environment through your style is not only easy but it’s also fun!
